Let’s be real, the PGA has had a monopoly on the golf industry since competitive golf was created. However, in June 2021 that all changed when the LIV was created which drew a lot of attention on how the PGA would handle its new competition.
Fast forward to 2025, notable pro golfers and legends such as: Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Bubba Watson, and Phil Mickelson are now participating on the LIV tour. The biggest difference these players are getting compared to their counterparts in the PGA is a guaranteed salary marking the first time a golfer has officially been paid just for being part of the league instead of having to win tournaments. As you can imagine this has definitely created a riff between the current PGA players (Rory McIlroy especially) and the LIV players who once belonged to the PGA. When this LIV was first announced the players who participated in it were not able to play in the PGA tour events, since then we are now able to see these great golfers in the 4 PGA Majors: The Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open. Behind the scenes there have been lots of litigation and court battles between the PGA and LIV, I am not going to get into all that I’m just mainly expressing my opinion about having both PGA and LIV available to the players. So with that being said how do I feel about the PGA and LIV leagues?
I will start out by first saying that I am just now really getting into golf and paying attention to the golf season all year. That being said, I find no problem with the LIV offering some competition to the PGA. You can not sit there and say if you were a professional golfer either just starting or being pretty successful that you wouldn’t take (at least think about) a contract possibly worth hundreds of millions of dollars guaranteed without winning or placing consistently at the top of the leaderboard at each tournament. That money is definitely life changing money even if you have made it professionally, some may say even generational money. The introduction of the LIV has generated some even better rivalry not just with specific golfers but also just between PGA and LIV. The media has to love this new league coming in not only entertainment purposes but for unlimited content pinning the LIV against the PGA players. Personally I am a big Rory McIlroy fan who has consistently stated his stance on LIV and that he plans to stay with the PGA. I know the speculating reports of LIV offering north of $700-800 million for Rory to join and I would say if he did I definitely could not blame him at all, how could you? That all being said I think the competition between these two leagues (PGA and LIV) brought a new way of thinking into the game of golf and having the competition is good for the golfers, fans, and the media. I would love to see on down the line tournament based around PGA vs LIV you can not tell me how much revenue that would make for both leagues from media rights, sponsorship, and lets not forget about the fans that would attend.
In ending, I hope going forward both the PGA and LIV continue to try and work together to get to a more common ground. However, golf the sport has gotten a lot more attention then it has in many years which helps to get new eyes on the games, create new content for fans to indulge in, and most importantly to grow the game and get more people outside playing golf!
