Long time away since my last blog post. Has there been plenty to write about in the sports world? Sure. However, the creative flow just was not flowing. All that being said it is a new year and I am going to try and write more this year especially about topics I enjoy, for example baseball and more importantly my Chicago Cubs! The 2025 season the Chicago Cubs in my opinion definitely overachieved by reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2020 but were bounced out by the Milwaukee Brewers, unfortunately. This past season had some standout play/players especially Pete Crow-Armstrong out in center field.

Also, we had Cade Horton who came out of nowhere and was straight dominant on the mound. (Should have won National League Rookie of the Year in my opinion, but I digress.) Horton ended up getting hurt and was not able to play in the playoffs which was a huge loss for our pitching rotation. I honestly feel if he were healthy the Cubs would have beaten the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Divisional Series and competed with the Dodgers in the NL Championship series, but we all know that did not happen and no need to dwell on the past. Cade is going to be back and will be just as dominant on the mound in the future as he was during his rookie season.

Overall, it was a great and surprising year for the Chicago Cubs in 2025, but what did they do in the offseason to take the next jump? I am going to share my opinions of a couple moves the Cubs made and what they should do for the 2026 season.
As we all know in years past the Chicago Cubs really have not made a lot of noise in the offseason/free agent market. We are a big market team, but never act like one. (Not saying I want to be like the Dodgers but spend some money please!) The Cubs first move was to get another starting pitcher and man did they go out and do just that with making a trade with the Miami Marlins for right hander Edward Cabrera.

Listen, I was kind of surprised and had some worried thoughts when the notification on my phone came up saying we acquired Cabrera in a trade where we sent some prospects including our number one overall Owen Caissie. However I looked up some videos on Cabrera and after seeing the arsenal of pitches he has with the ability to throw straight heat (98 or 99) and an absolute nasty curveball I felt much better. I understand the farm systems are important in baseball and that prospects help your team either in the future or in trades but I am a firm believer in giving me proven MLB guys instead of high prospects. Overall, acquiring Edward Cabrera I think is a great move. He fills either the number 2 or 3 spot in the starting rotation which is absolutely stacked now, especially if players like Cade Horton and Jameson Taillon continue their performance from last season along with a healthy Justin Steele and a more consistent Shota Imanaga. I like where the starting pitching rotation is at right now, I think on paper it is one of the tops in all MLB and with continued success and healthy players it could be absolutely dominant. We need to solidify relief pitchers a little bit but I think it’s the start to getting a dominant pitching staff especially if Daniel Palencia turns into our everyday electric closer.
Now, this next move the Cubs made surprised the hell out of me if I am telling the truth. The Chicago Cubs actually acted like a “big” market team and signed 3x All-Star and 2x World Series Champion third baseman Alex Bregman with a 5 year 175 million dollar contract!

Am I skeptical of this signing? Yes. However, during the press conference my skepticism got silenced when Jed said once they had a contract agreement with Alex that he immediately spoke to current players on the MLB roster, he called all the minor league coaches and spoke about philosophies and training that way he is teaching/telling the right thing to younger players, and he wanted to know what all players were working on this offseason so he can help in any way possible. That right there tells me we signed not only the right player but also a player with championship DNA. Overall, I am pleased with the signing of Alex Bregman. In the past I have been questioning players coming from the Astros, that is obvious, but at least with Bregman he stopped at the Boston Red Sox first before becoming a Chicago Cub. Finally the Chicago Cubs have signed a big name free agent for a decent amount of money for a position we greatly need. I believe Alex Bregman will be excellent for the Cubs this year and years to come both in the field and at the plate, especially at Wrigley Field! Great move Cubs!

In ending, I did say I would give my opinion on what else the Chicago Cubs could do this offseason. Honestly, with finalizing the bullpen and closing spots in the pitching rotation and figuring out who will take Kyle Tucker’s spot (which he was hurt most of 2025 so we have options for sure.) there is not much the Cubs really should do. I mean if we are dreaming or getting a little crazy maybe try and go get another stud starting pitcher like Zac Gallen. I also would not mind going to get a veteran/hall of fame starter on a one year deal like Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander to take up innings and to help out our young pitchers. That all being said, I think the Chicago Cubs have done really well this offseason for immediate and future success. I will end with an early prediction, give me the Cubs to win the NL Central and make a solid run in the playoffs, maybe getting to the National League Championship series!
